Salt-state units get a closer look at the housing, cover and vent.
Your 17-digit VIN decides which unit ships — never a close-enough interchange number.

Differentials fail differently in the Rust Belt. The housing hangs low in the salt spray, so trouble starts on the outside: a corroded vent tube stops breathing, moisture is drawn past the pinion seal, and water turns the gear oil milky until the bearings fail. Seized cover bolts and rusted fill plugs finish it — plenty of units are scrapped because nobody could service them, not because the gears wore out. Along the Gulf Coast the same process runs slower, through salt air and standing humidity.
Emissions inspections matter here too. Anywhere OBD-II readiness is checked, a used differential with the wrong gear ratio will catch you out: the wrong ratio shifts the wheel-speed signal, which lights the ABS and traction lamps and fails the car before the tailpipe is ever tested. On four-wheel drive, front and rear ratios must match each other or the driveline binds. That is why we match on your VIN rather than a bolt-pattern lookup.

It lets the two driven wheels turn at different speeds. Through a corner the outer wheel travels farther than the inner one, so it has to rotate more. Without a differential the tires would scrub and bind on every turn.
An open differential sends power to whichever wheel has least grip, which is fine on road but useless when one wheel lifts or hits ice. A locking rear differential cancels that and splits power equally between both wheels, which is what you want off-road.
No. Unlock it as soon as you are back on the pavement. A locked rear differential forces both wheels to turn at the same speed, so they fight each other through corners and wear out the tires and driveline faster.
Not one we list. Road salt attacks the housing, cover and vent tube from outside, so every donor unit is inspected at those points before it enters inventory. Pitted housings, blocked vents and corroded cover flanges do not get sold.
It depends on the unit, so check your quote before ordering. Every listing states what is included — complete assembly, third member or centre section — and our specialists confirm the exact contents with you at quote stage.
Wrong-part returns carry a 25% restocking fee, which is exactly why we match on VIN rather than an interchange number. Confirm your 17-digit VIN and the ratio tag with our specialists before you approve the order and it stops being a risk.
